We are currently seeking Laboratory Technicians to be based at a client site in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Laboratory Technicians will support the Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch (PPLB) at the CDC. The Polio and Picornavirus Laboratory Branch, a Division of Viral Diseases, is responsible for the development, evaluation and implementation of assays for the identification of poliovirus and for supporting studies to define the epidemiology and disease burden associated with poliovirus infection, in support of the WHO Global Poliovirus Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
Job
Responsibilities:
The Laboratory Technicians shall perform specialized testing of specimens submitted to the laboratory, perform standard laboratory methods and techniques to characterize and analyze viruses, and assist with reporting, training and research projects for the PPLB.
The Laboratory Technicians shall perform all or a subset of the following duties, in support of one or several related projects:
Employ methods including poliovirus stock preparation, virustitration, virus neutralization assays, and quality control standard measurements to
characterize the immune response to poliovirus vaccines from clinical trial sera submitted to CDC as part of vaccine development and evaluation studies, and
to perform Serum Neutralization Assay using the WHO-standard assay developed at CDC;
In support of assay development for GPEI, the Laboratory Technician shall analyze results of these neutralization assays, and compare them to other antibody measurements performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) or other assays;
Process stool specimens and isolate virus according to WHO-standard protocols. Samples will be processed as received;
Perform virus identification by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using WHO-standard assays developed at CDC;
Process, extract and perform standard diagnostic polio tests on specimens submitted for environmental surveillance studies. Samples will be processed in batches, as isolation results become available;
Support ongoing research projects into new or improved polio vaccines and perform virus quantitation in stool specimens. Samples will be processed in batches to make most efficient use of laboratory automation;
Perform specimen management activities for materials included in these international vaccine studies and serosurveys.
Non-Laboratory Surveillance Support Activities
Prepare reports, charts and graphs;
Present data at internal laboratory meetings.
