Supervisory Research Microbiologist

As a Supervisory Research Microbiologist you will:
Provide scientific leadership to a team of scientists supporting the HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs. Responsible for the planning, development and technical direction of a diagnostics research program/team. Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct and lead basic and applied biomedical research studies. Provide scientific consultative services to large and difficult programs or projects that have unusually demanding scientific problems or issues, and serves as a consultant to state and local health departments and health officials in foreign countries regarding investigations, control, and prevention of HIV/AIDS and antimicrobial resistance problems. Guide technical staff in the implementation and conduct of research methodologies in HIV diagnostic assay development and assay validation. Train and provide technical direction to team members. Write scientific papers for publication in leading scientific journals. Represent the agency at national and international professional scientific meetings. Basic Qualifications for the GS-0403:
Degree:
microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent from an accredited college and/or university. -OR- Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Qualifications:
In addition to meeting the basic qualifications requirements, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph. Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience in serving as a research project leader, planning, developing, designing, and evaluating laboratory diagnostic research related to HIV infection, transmission, prevention and control.
